EPICER @ CTE THIS WEEK

At Cherokee Trail, we focus on six character traits; teaching and fostering them in our classrooms in order to create learners who are strong both academically and socially. They are:

Enthusiasm

Perseverance

Integrity

Courage

Empathy

Respect

Each month we focus more closely on one trait - this month's EPICER trait is: EMPATHY.

   * I actively listen to others to understand their feelings and the situation

   * I  can put myself in someone else’s shoes

   * I notice clues about how others are feeling: their words and body language

   * I celebrate how I am the same and how I am different from others

   * I consider other people's feelings/wants/needs when I act

SEPTEMBER COUNSELOR'S CORNER - JANE STEINER

The school year is officially underway! I am currently in the process of finishing up visiting each class to teach a lesson about building a classroom community and relationships. I have also had the pleasure to meet with our newest students to Cherokee Trail. It has been fantastic to see the students again!
All CTE students receive the Second Step curriculum weekly taught by their classroom teacher or myself. Weekly lessons teach social-emotional learning skills with 4 different units.

Unit 1- Growth Mindset & Goal Setting

      Unit 2- Emotion Management

      Unit 3- Empathy & Kindness

      Unit 4- Problem Solving
As the counselor, I have the privilege of providing support to every student at CTE. Confidentiality is respected, unless they plan on hurting themselves, hurting someone else, or someone is hurting them. Although I do not require parental consent, if you would like to request I meet with your child for a specific concern, please don’t hesitate to reach out!
I look forward to a great school year and supporting all our wonderful students at CTE!  Feel free to email me @ [email protected].

FROM THE PRINCIPAL - JOSH MILLER

The Principal Chronicles continue ... As I write this the weather outside is currently about 50 degrees. Fall is definitely here and although I love this time of year I am not 100% sure I am ready for freezing cold school days.
On the school front, we are rapidly preparing for teacher conferences. I cannot believe that in just a few weeks, the first quarter will have passed. I probably say this every year but I can't believe how time flies. Other than that, our teachers are busy working through their new literacy curriculum and have seen tremendous growth in our students. It makes me so happy to see us getting on track and things back to as normal as we are allowed.
On the home front, my daughter and I went to Meow Wolf last weekend. If you haven't heard of it, I think the official definition would be an interactive art display. In actuality it is an extreme interpretation of visual stimulus with an emphasis on oddity. Basically it was one of the strangest places I have ever been. Back when my daughter was in elementary school a friend of hers went to Meow Wolf in New Mexico and loved it so when we heard it was coming to Colorado we got tickets as soon as we could.
The whole experience is based around a story that connects these four large areas of the building. Don't ask me what the story is because I have no Earthly idea. If you wanted to spend more money you could get these cards that help you unravel the story, but we just went for the cheap version of walking around trying to figure everything out. I have to say the attention to detail and the amount of really strange stuff was outstanding, but in the end, it was a bit overwhelming for my daughter. Mostly because there was no rhyme or rhythm to it. People were just basically wandering around. The cool thing was all of the different rooms and secret passages; there are literally a million different ways to experience Meow Wolf. Bottom line, if I were ever to go again I would go with some of my adult friends and my daughter would go with her high school friends, but I am not sure elementary aged students would get anything other than a high degree of visual stimulation. I have to say it was really nice walking out at the end to a "normal" society with actual structure to it.
That is it for this week's edition. Stay tuned next week when the Principal Chronicles continue.
