PSP NEWS
PSP Information: Welcome back, CTE community! For those of you who don't know what PSP is, please click here for more information. You will find more information on our website about sponsored events and fundraisers. Please join us for our first meeting of the school year on Tuesday, August 20th at 2:15pm at CTE. All are welcome!
PSP Membership & Yearbook Order: Consider purchasing a PSP membership. It allows us to start the year with some funds to support our school and when you purchase a PSP membership you receive a yearbook and a CTE logo decal. Fill out the form and send it in with your student along with payment.
Volunteer Opportunities: There are several opportunities for people to lend a helping hand and support our school! Please see the volunteer flyer for all of the PSP sponsored events and let us know how you can help! Let us know if you have any questions about the events or if you have any ideas about new events you'd like to see offered at our school!

AUGUST COUNSELOR'S CORNER - JANE STEINER
It's August - we're back! My name is Jane Steiner and I am the School Counselor at Cherokee Trail Elementary. I am so excited and honored to start another year with my amazing CTE family! I am committed to encouraging, supporting, and empowering our students to become their best selves. My primary task is to help ALL students become better learners by providing a comprehensive and developmental counseling program that meets their academic, personal/social, and career development needs.
I will be meeting with students individually and in small groups, conducting classroom lessons while incorporating the Second Step and MindUp curriculum, and collaborating with parents and staff.
Support provided can be therapeutic, but the role of a school counselor is not to diagnose or provide therapy. I am able to provide temporary/short-term support to help students overcome acute issues having an impact on their school performance. I am a resource similar to the school nurse in that she can provide help, but refers out for more serious problems. Licensed mental health counselors are the appropriate resource to provide ongoing therapy sometimes needed by families and children.
As the counselor, I have the privilege of providing support to every student at CTE. Confidentiality is respected, unless they plan on hurting themselves, hurting someone else, or someone is hurting them. Although I do not require parent consent, if you would like to request I meet with your child for a specific concern, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
I look forward to a great school year and supporting all our wonderful students at CTE!

Welcome back to school! We are so happy to have the building come back to life with laughter, love and learning. Thanks for sending your students ready each day. I consider it a privilege to work alongside you in educating your children.
Safety First!
1. Thank you for having your students line up with their classes before school starts. If you are unsure of where your students’ classes line up, feel free to ask any adult in an orange vest. We are all happy to help! Here’s a little run down of where classes line up:
- Kindergarten - front entrance
- First Grade - by the first grade classrooms
- Second Grade - blacktop/outdoor ramp
- Third Grade - blacktop/outdoor ramp
- Fourth Grade - by the fourth grade classrooms
- Fifth Grade - on the sidewalk near the sixth grade entrance
- Sixth Grade - by the sixth grade classrooms
2. Here are some great ways to ensure your student's safety while traveling to school!
3. CTE is tentatively planning our first Evacuation Drill (fire drill) on Friday, August 16th. It's required by law that public schools practice an Evacuation Drill within the first 10 days of school. Douglas County follows the Standard Response Protocol. For a quick overview of this protocol, please watch this short video. CTE's expectations for students during an evacuation drill are as follows:
- classroom and exterior doors closed
- no voices during the drill (raise your hand if you have a need)
- walk safely and stay in line so your teacher can easily see/find you
- walk to the wooden fence on the west side of the field and stop
- once at the fence, stay in line and face the building so you can see and hear directions easily
- wait for directions from your teacher or administrator
- stay quiet from the time the alarm goes off until you return to your next activity

FROM THE PRINCIPAL - JOSH MILLER
The Principal Chronicles continue ....
Summer is over and we are back in school. As always it seems as though time just flies by. It seems like only yesterday I was a first year principal and now here I sit typing this at the beginning of my 6th year here at CTE. I'm still very excited to be here, I am proud to be a part of this community and as I told our staff during our first few days back, we GET to be here!! I am so happy to see our returning students and welcome in our new students. It is going to be a great year.
One of the things we are going to be focusing on this year is literacy with our goal being that every kindergarten and first grade student is on grade level in literacy by the end of this year. I know it is a lofty goal but I think it's too important not to try. Another goal of mine this year is to try and push out a video message now and again to showcase all of the things that we have going on at school. As of now I have no idea how I am going to do it but since I just said it publicly, I'm committed to figuring it out. I'm rolling out a video so all of our loyal readers can actually see what is happening here at school. I'm a proud principal so why not showcase what I am most proud of?
On the home front, summer went really well. I traveled a ton for both school and for personal reasons. It seems like pretty much one week I was at school and the other week I was traveling. I attended two conferences this summer for school; each one was excellent and I am excited to bring what we learned back to CTE. With my family I went to Jamaica for a week, where I consumed mass quantities of food that I would not normally eat (as it was all inclusive). I literally had 4 desserts a night. Seriously I'm not making that up. I took the word vacation to a whole new level. Other than that, I went to Philadelphia with my significant other. She had to work so I just goofed around the city which was pretty cool. I took a tour of the Eastern State Penitentiary which was SUPER creepy even in the daytime. I also made lots of poor food choices there too. How can you not go to Philly and not have a cheesesteak? I probably should have shoved that sandwich directly into my arteries. Lastly, we took our annual family trip to The Springs to compete in the Colorado State games. Our family took home a gold, a silver, and a bronze. Not too shabby for one weekend. Plus we saw a magic show that was unreal. I may add some more stories later on this year about some of the adventures we took on our family vacations.
