DECEMBER: COUNSELOR'S CORNER - JANE STEINER Looking to build your child’s character this holiday season? Instead of buying gifts, encourage your child to make “tickets”. They can be good for things such as playing games with a sibling or helping a parent with housework. He or she can draw the tickets on paper and decorate them with markers. Another idea is to have your child create artwork to give as presents. As people show their appreciation for their gift, your child will feel valued and a sense of mastery. Happy Holidays!

FROM THE PRINCIPAL - JOSH MILLER
The Principal Chronicles continue ... Thanksgiving has come and gone and I guess we are officially in the holiday season. Such a magical time of year, I truly love going around and seeing all of the lights and just the whole sense of giving. This time of year is one of my favorites. Thanksgiving in our house was fairly non-traditional this year. Being a blended family we are always pulled in a hundred different directions and we decided that this year we were going to make our own traditions. Tradition number 1: instead of Thanksgiving dinner we did brunch. Since we have one vegetarian and one who doesn't eat meat off of a bone, it makes it fairly challenging to have turkey. So we decided to have everyone in our house make two items to bring to our brunch - whatever they wanted. Our official menu included the following in no particular order: homemade applesauce, a German pancake, shortbread cookies, purple potato crusted frittata with bacon, jello, cranberry sauce, lemon bread, and a homemade swiss cake roll. I'm not sure which we had more of: food or total grams of sugar?! If that wasn't enough our second tradition was going out to dinner Thanksgiving night. I started looking for reservations before Halloween only to discover most places were already booked for the year. I found it a bit odd that people were thinking about Thanksgiving reservations in the summertime but I digress. We ended up at Simms Landing which has been a fixture in Lakewood for about 300 years. The dinner was decent, they had a chocolate fountain which was a big hit with the two youngest members of our household. I was a little surprised to see when we walked into the room that housed the buffet, that the first tray which you saw was a giant array of doughnuts. Turns out that the buffet was half traditional Thanksgiving food and half brunch-type fare. It is always interesting to serve yourself a pile of mashed potatoes immediately followed by serving yourself a big pile of breakfast sausage. Let's just say that I made countless poor food choices and those of you who know me know that I very rarely make poor food choices. I cannot confirm or deny taking large quantities of pepto after dinner that evening. That is it for this week, stay tuned next week when the Principal Chronicles continues....
