FROM THE PRINCIPAL - JOSH MILLER
The Principal Chronicles continue ...
As many of you know my youngest entered middle school this year and I cannot tell you how different things are from a year ago. My oldest is in her last year of middle school (in Jefferson County) but holy cow, those two schools are very different. For example, my youngest is in a pod where all of her teachers are about 75 feet apart and talk to each other on a daily basis about all of their students. My oldest walks about 3 miles every day crisscrossing her building in order to make it to her classes, in a three minute passing period as opposed to five. We actually measured her distance with a fitness tracker (I know we are sad and have no life). Another difference is their electives. My oldest has an elective right now called technology which is fairly ambiguous and is turning out to be a fancy way of saying typing. My youngest is in an elective called multi-media where she is doing a stop animation video where a frog meets a tree (why a frog would feel it necessary to meet a tree is a different chronicles all together, but I digress). I was actually shocked at the level of technology at both schools. The last difference I'll mention, although there are literally hundreds more, is after-school options. My oldest has the choice, as an 8th grader, to play tackle football (umm no), play volleyball (maybe), Sign Language Club (pretty cool), or something called Comic Club. My youngest can do volleyball or run cross country (if you ever met my youngest you would know that neither isn't happening), be in a school play, drama club (both are right up her alley especially drama club), or something called Iron Chef where she could cook (she tried for that one but it filled up in about 7 minutes). Not only that, if students want to start their own club all they have to do is get a teacher and they are good to go. Just having the view of how the two districts operate really makes me appreciate being a part of DCSD. Our kids have so many more opportunities than students in other parts of Colorado. It also makes me extremely motivated to ensure our students here at CTE have every opportunity to explore and find out what they truly love as well as prepare them academically for whatever lies ahead. That is it for this week. Stay tuned next week when the Principal Chronicles continues...
