COLORADO STATEWIDE ASSESSMENTS

Students at CTE will be taking the Colorado Measure of Academic Success [CMAS] tests 10-20Apr23.

State assessments matter. CMAS testing will allow families and teachers to see yearly academic growth since the pandemic and will provide more insight into the areas where students continue to be impacted by the disruptions from the pandemic.

Benefits to Students and Families

* The tests help students, families and educators know how students are performing compared to their peers across the state. They also help inform student academic growth over time.

* The statewide assessments provide information on how well the state’s education system is meeting the goals of helping every child attain academic proficiency.

* Assessment results help students, parents, schools and districts understand if students have mastered the content they need to know by the end of the school year and whether they are on track for college or careers after graduation.

* Assessment results let parents/guardians know how their student is doing compared with their peers across the school, district and state.

Benefits to Schools

* School ratings are based on average scores on state assessments as well as growth students show from year to year on assessments.

* Data from state assessments can help schools (and feeders of schools) build master schedules, offer appropriate coursework, and meet the needs of all students, particularly as they transition from one school to the next.

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN WELLNESS - NOELLE DUNKER
Grades K/1/2: Our focus this week will be patience.  Students will learn about how to stay calm in stressful situations and how to keep frustration at bay when things are happening as quickly as they would like.

Grades 3/4/5/6: We will focus our attention on developing a deeper understanding of the nervous system and its direct impact on the regulatory state of our emotions.
Needed for Wellness: We are in need of tissues. Please feel free to send a box in with your child.  I am grateful for your support.

MARCH COUNSELOR'S CORNER - JANE STEINER

CTE students continue to acquire a variety of essential skills and knowledge!

In first grade, we are continuing the 7 lesson series from the Safer, Smarter Kids curriculum. So far, we have covered a variety of safety rules. Upcoming lessons include body boundaries, safe/unsafe secrets, and tattling vs. reporting. First grade parents receive a parent newsletter after each lesson is taught.

In fourth grade, we started our bully prevention unit from Second Step. This unit has a total of 4 lessons that will cover 1- recognize, report, and refuse bullying 2- bystander power 3- bystander responsibility 4- cyberbullying. The students have been very engaged in situational discussions and sharing experiences.

In fifth grade, we read “Teammates” by Peter Golenbock. This is a moving story about how Jackie Robinson became the first black player on a Major League baseball team.

In sixth grade, we completed our bully prevention unit from Second Step. In our last lesson, students learned how to be an upstander and the impact their courageous actions can have on a bully situation. The students took a pre and post survey to assess specific attitudes, knowledge, and skills taught during the unit.

Pre-survey grade 6 average 57%

Post-survey grade 6 average 85%

Wow! That is an increase of 28 percentage points!

If you are interested in reading more about bullying or how to help your child, take a look at this website.  Bullying can also be reported to Safe 2 Tell Colorado.

Coming soon: New lesson topics for second, third and fifth grade!

UPCOMING CALENDAR HIGHLIGHTS

FROM THE PRINCIPAL - JOSH MILLER

The Principal Chronicles continue ...
We have made it to the final stretch of the year. All we have left now is our State testing, the last few months of instruction, and a ton of activities to wrap up the year. As I constantly say, I can't believe how fast the year goes by. It seems like only yesterday we were at the beginning of the school year. Although this part of the year is extremely busy, it's also a really good time to see the students show all of the growth they have made. It is one of the best things in all of education is seeing how far students come in the span of a single school year. In addition, there are so many fun things happening at the end of the year, it makes all the craziness worthwhile.
On the home front, my daughter and I traveled to San Fransico over Spring Break and then drove to LA with stops in Monterey and Santa Barbara. The plan was for us to drive the Pacific Coast Highway and have my daughter and me switch off driving. Unfortunately, the weather was not our friend. California is currently under the largest amount of rainfall in the last 40 years. Large portions of the PCH were closed due to mudslides and flooding, and rain was rampant during our time there. We still had a lot of fun and were able to make tons of poor food choices, but we definitely missed the views, the sun, and the coast. Maybe in the future, we will go back and try it again to actually see what we set out to see.
That is it for this week's edition, stay tuned to next week when the Principal Chronicles continue ...
