6th Grade Performance
Attention 6th Grade Families:
Mr. Halley would like to announce that all of our 6th grade students will be putting on a performance on Thursday March 30th at 6pm in the gym at Cherokee Trail Elementary. The performance will be a telling of the story “The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse.”  We will include the use of a shadow screen, original expressive movement and music created by the 6th grade classes. We are working on our performance every day during music and if you want to see some sneak peaks please check the Music page on the CTE website over the next few weeks as we prepare our performance.

If you have any questions, please email Mr. Halley.

In March we will be focusing on RESPECT. The indicators for respect at CTE are:

MARCH COUNSELOR'S CORNER - JANE STEINER

CTE students continue to acquire a variety of essential skills and knowledge!

In first grade, we are continuing the 7 lesson series from the Safer, Smarter Kids curriculum. So far, we have covered a variety of safety rules. Upcoming lessons include body boundaries, safe/unsafe secrets, and tattling vs. reporting. First grade parents receive a parent newsletter after each lesson is taught.

In fourth grade, we started our bully prevention unit from Second Step. This unit has a total of 4 lessons that will cover 1- recognize, report, and refuse bullying 2- bystander power 3- bystander responsibility 4- cyberbullying. The students have been very engaged in situational discussions and sharing experiences.

In fifth grade, we read “Teammates” by Peter Golenbock. This is a moving story about how Jackie Robinson became the first black player on a Major League baseball team.

In sixth grade, we completed our bully prevention unit from Second Step. In our last lesson, students learned how to be an upstander and the impact their courageous actions can have on a bully situation. The students took a pre and post survey to assess specific attitudes, knowledge, and skills taught during the unit.

Pre-survey grade 6 average 57%

Post-survey grade 6 average 85%

Wow! That is an increase of 28 percentage points!

If you are interested in reading more about bullying or how to help your child, take a look at this website.  Bullying can also be reported to Safe 2 Tell Colorado.

Coming soon: New lesson topics for second, third and fifth grade!

UPCOMING CALENDAR HIGHLIGHTS

FROM THE PRINCIPAL - JOSH MILLER

The Principal Chronicles continue ...
We have finally made it to spring break. As always I cannot believe how fast this year has gone by. I know I say that every year but it still never ceases to amaze me. Each day brings new challenges and there are never two days that are the same. For example, this week alone I will interview candidates for next year, meet with parents at conferences, attend truancy court, and wrangle a rabid raccoon. Plus many many many more adventures each and every day. Spring truly brings out the fun and excitement of the school year. Other than that, we are just about finished hiring for next year with only a couple of positions left to hire. Just as feared, the teacher pool has been really shallow. Luckily, I have been working on my connections and we have been fortunate to find some great teachers to come in and work with our students next year. A lot of other schools cannot say the same as the teacher shortage is a real thing. Fingers crossed the last few positions work out for us as well.
On the home front, my daughter and I leave for California on Saturday and will be gone the entire Spring Break. As I mentioned last week, we are flying to San Fransico and then road-tripping down to LA. We have a lot of stops along the way and I am hoping the weather holds up. As of now, it is supposed to rain the entire time but that is all right. We will make an adventure out of it no matter what. Honestly, I am running out of time to have these types of experiences with my daughter. She turns 16 in July and she spends more and more time away from home now. That is all a good thing but it is just hard being a single dad for 14 years and it mostly just being her and me; it is going to be a pretty seismic shift for me when she finally leaves for college. A word to all of you parents out there with young kids, enjoy those moments because they are fleeting. You blink and your kids are all grown up. Sniff.
That is it for this weeks episode, stay tuned for next week when the Principal Chronicles continue ....
