COUNSELOR'S CORNER - JANE STEINER

APRIL

We are very busy learning new social-emotional skills and strategies! As you probably know, all classroom teachers teach social-emotional learning through our Second Step curriculum.

In addition, Kindergarten students will be starting the Safer, Smarter Kids curriculum. First grade students are just about to complete this program. Students cover topics such as trusted adults, using an assertive voice, body boundaries, tattling, and strangers.

Fourth grade classes have completed the MindUp curriculum. Students learned and practiced mindfulness throughout the lessons.  Students learned about the limbic system in their brain and its role in regulating emotions.

Fifth grade students learned about the origin of human rights through a series of lessons. Several human rights were explored with discussion that related to action that kids can take to make a difference.

Sixth grade students are continuing lessons from the Second Step curriculum. We have begun a new unit that focuses on thoughts, emotions, and decisions. The objective of this unit is to apply a strategy for emotion management that is best for them, based on context.

Coming soon! Lessons for second and third grade students!

UPCOMING CALENDAR HIGHLIGHTS

FROM THE PRINCIPAL - JOSH MILLER

The Principal Chronicles continue ... So I figured by the time I wrote this the cold weather would have been gone and Spring may finally be upon us. Unfortunately, Punxsutawney Phil wasn't messing around when he said six more weeks of winter. Who would have thought that we would have a 16-degree morning and a near ice blizzard in the middle of April?

On the school front, we just got done with our last professional development day on Monday and are about to jump into our end-of-year diagnostic testing with iReady. Unlike CMAS, we are pretty excited for our students to take the diagnostic so we can finally see how our students grew during the course of this year. We are pretty confident that all of our hard work will finally pay off. It is also starting to dawn on me that the longest school year in the history of mankind is finally coming to a close. I'm already getting excited for next year and having some semblance of normalcy.

On the personal front, my daughter finally decided on a High School to go to next year so I will be able to move forward in buying a house to settle in for the next four years. One thing I didn't realize was how crazy the housing market is. I looked into a new build and when I met with the staff, I first had to get pre-approved for a loan before I could even schedule an appointment, and once I got a tour of the new place I entered my name on a waiting list/lottery list. So essentially once a building is "released" to start construction the company literally pulls a name out of a hat. If your name is pulled they call you, and you have an hour to respond or you lose the opportunity. How crazy is that? Should be an interesting 10 months that is for sure.

Well, that is it for this week, stay tuned next week when the Principal Chronicles continues.....
