JANUARY COUNSELOR'S CORNER - JANE STEINER
Happy New Year! I can’t believe we are now in the second half of the school year! The students at CTE have been learning a lot about themselves and others through our Social-Emotional curriculums. The students are learning how to regulate their emotions as well as how their actions impact others.
In Kindergarten, I will be implementing the Safer, Smarter Kids curriculum to teach students how to identify unsafe situations and tools to use in them.
Fourth grade students are continuing to learn about mindfulness, now focusing on mindful movement through the Mind Up curriculum.
Fifth grade students have broadened their perspective and knowledge about the world and others by learning about Human Rights through a series of lessons.
In sixth grade, we are starting a new unit from the Second Step Program on thoughts, emotions, and decisions. Students have really enjoyed learning about the adolescent brain and how it relates to their emotions and behaviors. We are also expecting a visit from the counselors at Sierra Middle School this month to present information about middle school and electives.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL - JOSH MILLER
The Principal Chronicles continue ... So there are many things I don't love about getting older but one of the toughest things for me is celebrating my birthday. I go out of my way to try and not celebrate my birthday. I know that may seem odd but I just don't really like that kind of attention. It makes me feel very awkward especially when people sing Happy Birthday. It's always so strange, how am I supposed to act when people are singing? Am I supposed to sing? Do I just sit there? Plus then everyone is there looking at you. Man, it sure is awkward for me.
Despite my protests, my family has decided to celebrate my birthday this year by taking me to a place called Bad Axe Throwing. Basically it is like bowling, but instead of having a bowling ball and pins, you chuck an axe at a target. Supposedly, you start the experience with a coach who shows you how to throw it and then you spend the rest of the time competing against whomever you brought with you. The funniest part (well funny to me) is that they also serve alcohol there. I'm not sure about you, but I would think that alcohol may not be the best beverage to serve while people are throwing axes around. It is also going to be pretty funny to watch my girls try and throw some axes around. Who knows where they might land. So if you see me later on down the road with a missing limb or appendage, you'll know why.
The other thing my family has planned, is to take me to have some empanadas. A few weeks ago I watched a television show that was all about meat pies from around the world, which was mildly interesting, but put a craving for empanadas in my head. Strangely enough, the next day, I read an article about the best empanadas in every state (the universe works in very mysterious ways). Then that night I had dreams about empanadas; so guess what we did? yep, went and had some empanadas. We went to Maria Empanadas and they were some of the best I have ever eaten (not really a lot of comparison though since that was also the first empanada I've ever eaten). Needless to say, my family wants to go back so we will be having some birthday empanadas this year followed by some axe throwing.
The last part of the evening, we are going to be headed to the Denver Central Market which is basically a bunch of shops and restaurants in one big building. I'm looking forward to that just for the simple reason that I can try a bunch of new and exciting foods. It is really strange, ever since I have started really tracking and weighing all of my food, I can't really seem to stop thinking about different kinds of food. I wonder if I am becoming slightly neurotic in my old age. Again, if you see me randomly walking around muttering some nonsense about food and missing a body part, at least you'll have some inkling that my birthday was one for the ages (either that, or I finally snapped mentally which is always a possibility).
Well that is it for this week. Here's to axes, empanadas, and my buddy the Ground Hog!! Have a wonderful week and we will see you again when the Principal Chronicles continue ....
