AUGUST COUNSELOR'S CORNER - JANE STEINER  It's August - we're back! My name is Jane Steiner and I am the School Counselor at Cherokee Trail Elementary. I am so excited and honored to start another year with my amazing CTE family! I am committed to encouraging, supporting, and empowering our students to become their best selves. My primary task is to help ALL students become better learners by providing a comprehensive and developmental counseling program that meets their academic, personal/social, and career development needs.
I will be meeting with students individually and in small groups, conducting classroom lessons while incorporating the Second Step and MindUp curriculum, and collaborating with parents and staff. Support provided can be therapeutic, but the role of a school counselor is not to diagnose or provide therapy. I am able to provide temporary/short-term support to help students overcome acute issues having an impact on their school performance. I am a resource similar to the school nurse in that she can provide help, but refers out for more serious problems. Licensed mental health counselors are the appropriate resource to provide ongoing therapy sometimes needed by families and children. As the counselor, I have the privilege of providing support to every student at CTE. Confidentiality is respected, unless they plan on hurting themselves, hurting someone else, or someone is hurting them. Although I do not require parent consent, if you would like to request I meet with your child for a specific concern, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I look forward to a great school year and supporting all our wonderful students at CTE! Back to school parent articles:

FROM THE AP - ROBIN HUNT Safety First! Thanks for your support following our first Evacuation Drill. The students did an awesome job!

Please mark your calendars now for Walk To School Day on October 2nd. What a great time to find the best walking route to school and to enjoy the outdoors on your way to and from school. Academic Excellence Our teachers are currently gathering baseline data in Reading and Math through our new district wide assessment, iReady. Our students have recently competed a writing assessment as well. Teachers are implementing a new assessment to better determine reading levels. The assessment is very comprehensive which measures reading level, word knowledge (spelling patterns), and comprehension. We are planning to have another exceptional year of academic growth!

The Principal Chronicles continue ... And just like that we are into and about finished with our third week of school. I am constantly amazed at how fast time flies. We have been having lots of conversations this week around the building about kids growing up so fast. Many of our staff members have students starting college for the first time this week so there has been lots of talk of feeling old and kids growing up. I'm feeling the old vibe myself as my oldest is now a freshman at Green Mountain High School and my youngest is in 7th grade at Cimarron. Holy cow. I swear I have one foot in the grave already. Speaking of getting old, my parents are moving out of Estes Park. They have lived there for close to 15 years and I guess they decided to downsize and move to Fort Collins. Why Fort Collins? I have no earthly idea. They love to hike in the mountains, but last time I checked there weren't any mountains in Fort Collins. They also love being out and away from people. Again last time I checked there were lots more people in Fort Collins than in Estes Park. Who knows, I guess as long as they are healthy and happy all will be good. I will miss heading up there to get away. I really love Estes Park. I guess I'll need to love Fort Collins. Actually I went to school at CSU and I hated every minute of it. That was only because I didn't intend to go there. I ended up there after I lost my soccer scholarship to Oregon State but that is another story for another chronicle. That is it for this week, stay tuned to next week where I will most likely ramble aimlessly about random topics. Have a great week and see you when the Principal Chronicles continues...
