spelling bee

The spelling bee was very fun. First, we had to take a test in November to determine whether or not we would get in the spelling bee. When I found out I got in, I was ecstatic. After Thanksgiving break, I got the spelling list, and I studied away. When the school spelling bee finally came, I was nervous, but prepared. They gave us each number tags and I was #10. The first round finally started. Then the second, and the third, and so on... after about an hour, there was only one person and I left, Lilah Bruce, we were off. For maybe three rounds it was just us, but then, she spelt a word wrong. Since there was only us left, she was still in, but, if I spelt my word right, I would win. That was what happened. My winning word was perpetual. I was so happy! "That is correct, we have a spelling bee winner!" Mr. Bartuska said. I hugged my parents and told Lilah good job. Now to study for the District Bee...

It was about two weeks before the Bee when I started studying. I had to study vocab and regular spelling. I'm not going to lie, it wasn't easy. I would come home from school and study. I woke up on Saturday morning, the adrenaline was already flowing. My mom, dad, and I all got in the car and started towards Castle Rock Middle school where the District Bee was going to be held. Once we got inside my mom and I practiced words to make sure I was prepared. After a bit of that, the district lady told the parents they had to leave while we took the written portion. We had to do 25 spelling words and 15 vocabulary words. They definitely weren't easy words. After we finished we went to lunch to burn time. When we arrived back at the middle school we had about 45 minutes to burn, I waited on my phone very nervously. When we saw a crowd of people swarming the doors, my dad and I knew it was time to check. There were four lists of names all stating the same ones. I checked the list, my name wasn't on it. I was upset, but happy for myself that I had made it that far. I had an amazing Spelling Bee experience and I hope to get even farther next year. Katie Janeczek - Mrs. Tyler's 5th grade
