FROM NUTRITION SERVICES

Why Aren’t School Meals Free Anymore?

Over the last two years, the USDA has provided schools waivers that provide meals at no cost to students. Those waivers will expire after the 2021-2022 school year ends. This means a return to paid meals beginning August 8, 2022 for students that do not qualify for Free or Reduced Meal Benefits.

Do I need to submit an application to receive Free or Reduced price meals?

Yes! Everyone must submit a new application for each school year.

Applications will be available online beginning July 15, 2022 and can be found here: https://www.myschoolapps.com/.

Paper applications can also be found at your school site or the Nutrition Services office at  2812 N Highway 85, Building E, Castle Rock, CO 80109.

We encourage EVERYONE to apply to see if they qualify.
I don’t qualify for Free or Reduced meal benefits. How much will meals cost?

Lunch Prices are as follows:
*
Elementary School:  $3.25
*
Middle School:  $3.75
*
High School:  $4.00

Breakfast (where served) Prices are as follows:
* Elementary School:  $2.00
* Middle School:  $2.25
* High School:  $2.50

All meal prices include an entrée, fruit, veggies, and milk. Ala carte options are available at all schools and pricing varies by item. Charter school pricing varies so please confirm on your school’s website.  Please ensure your student has money in their account for meals prior to the first day of school by visiting My School Bucks.

AUGUST COUNSELOR'S CORNER - JANE STEINER

Welcome Back! My name is Jane Steiner and I am the School Counselor at Cherokee Trail Elementary. I am excited and honored to start my 5th year with my amazing CTE family and my 17th year as a school counselor! I am committed to encouraging, supporting, and empowering our students to become their best selves. My primary task is to help ALL students become better learners by providing a comprehensive and developmental counseling program that meets their academic, personal/social, and career development needs.

While following district and state protocols, I will be meeting with students individually and in small groups, conducting classroom lessons to build student success skills, and collaborating with parents and staff.

Support provided can be therapeutic, but the role of a school counselor is not to diagnose or provide therapy. I am able to provide temporary/short-term support to help students overcome acute issues having an impact on their school performance. I am a resource similar to the school nurse in that she can provide help, but refers out for more serious problems. Licensed mental health counselors are the appropriate resource to provide ongoing therapy sometimes needed by families and children.

As the counselor, I have the privilege of providing support to every student at CTE. Confidentiality is respected, unless they plan on hurting themselves, hurting someone else, or someone is hurting them. Although I do not require parental consent, if you would like to request I meet with your child for a specific concern, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

I look forward to a great school year and supporting all our wonderful students at CTE!  Feel free to email me: [email protected]

FROM THE PRINCIPAL - JOSH MILLER

The Principal Chronicles Continue ....
The Principal Chronicles is back again for the ninth consecutive year. I cannot believe I have been at Cherokee Trail for nine years and in the education field for 23 years. Basically, what I am saying is that I am old, and have been around a long time. Having said that, I am still honored to be a part of this community and I truly love being here.

This summer here at school was a lot more mellow than last summer. We didn't have any construction projects or any major renovations. We just spent our summer cleaning and prepping to start the year. We wanted our students to come back to a clean and organized building. Other than a few spots that still need to be painted, I think it was mission accomplished. Besides a super clean building, we added a small number of new staff members and are sticking with all of the same academic programs we had last year. Our focus for this year is all about supporting our students in all areas. We want to make sure our teachers are the most highly trained in the district and give them the tools to help our students no matter what happens.

On a personal note, my summer was spent finishing our basement and renovating our kitchen. My daughter and I spent some time with my parents and sister in Africa. We were in Botswana for about two weeks and saw a lot of amazing animals and had some unreal experiences. The memories we made will last a lifetime.

That is it for this week's edition, stay tuned all year for all of our adventures here at school and also at home. We are so excited everyone is back and it is going to be a great year. See you next time when the Principal Chronicles continue ...
