AUGUST COUNSELOR'S CORNER - JANE STEINER

Welcome Back! My name is Jane Steiner and I am the School Counselor at Cherokee Trail Elementary. I am excited and honored to start my 5th year with my amazing CTE family and my 17th year as a school counselor! I am committed to encouraging, supporting, and empowering our students to become their best selves. My primary task is to help ALL students become better learners by providing a comprehensive and developmental counseling program that meets their academic, personal/social, and career development needs.

While following district and state protocols, I will be meeting with students individually and in small groups, conducting classroom lessons to build student success skills, and collaborating with parents and staff.

Support provided can be therapeutic, but the role of a school counselor is not to diagnose or provide therapy. I am able to provide temporary/short-term support to help students overcome acute issues having an impact on their school performance. I am a resource similar to the school nurse in that she can provide help, but refers out for more serious problems. Licensed mental health counselors are the appropriate resource to provide ongoing therapy sometimes needed by families and children.

As the counselor, I have the privilege of providing support to every student at CTE. Confidentiality is respected, unless they plan on hurting themselves, hurting someone else, or someone is hurting them. Although I do not require parental consent, if you would like to request I meet with your child for a specific concern, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

I look forward to a great school year and supporting all our wonderful students at CTE!  Feel free to email me: [email protected]

FROM THE PRINCIPAL - JOSH MILLER

The Principal Chronicles Continue ....
It finally feels as though school is back to its "normal" state. It seems like it has been forever since I was able to say that, but it definitely feels good around here. We had our first assembly of the year as well as our first lightning dismissal. Both were night-and-day different from where we were a year ago. Student behaviors are returning to the typical behaviors we saw prior to the pandemic - so much better this year! (and it isn't even close). Our goal for this year is to better support our students and ensure our teachers have the tools to work through any behavior gaps our students have.
On the personal front, I've been searching for ways to keep myself in shape without running or daily CrossFit. Late last school year, I developed plantar fasciitis in my left foot which basically means when I walk it feels as though someone is sticking a knife in my foot. I figured I would do what I always do and just suck it up and deal with it. Unfortunately, that strategy was not successful so I was forced to rest it. Boooooo. I decided to rest it during my vacation in Africa since it was pretty tough to go out for a run when things out on said run could potentially eat you for breakfast.
As of now, I have residual pain in my foot but it isn't anywhere near what it was. Long story, even longer, I figured I should start looking for some activity less taxing on the body. I tried golf but that was terrible and I did not enjoy it at all. Even though my daughter still loves it and wants to play, it isn't something I would do on my own. My current avenue has been tennis. I've never played tennis before in my life but I figured I'd give it a shot. I took a bunch of beginning tennis classes over the summer and have been playing (and getting my buns kicked) against friends. Last week I decided to try to play in a tennis tournament. I got destroyed but I learned a lot. It was very humbling but kind of fun. Who knows, maybe this might be my new thing. Of course, I still run and do CrossFit no matter how much my foot hurts. So if you see my limping around school, you'll know I'm not hurt, it's just me refusing to slow down and admit I'm old.
That is it for this week's edition. Stay tuned for next time when the Principal Chronicles continue ...
