At Cherokee Trail, we focus on six character traits; teaching and fostering them in our classrooms in order to create learners who are strong both academically and socially. They are:







Each month we focus more closely on one trait - this month's EPICER trait is: EMPATHY.

   * I actively listen to others to understand their feelings and the situation

   * I  can put myself in someone else’s shoes 

   * I notice clues about how others are feeling: their words and body language

   * I celebrate how I am the same and how I am different from others

   * I consider other people's feelings/wants/needs when I act


What’s Happening in Social Emotional Wellness?
This week in Social Emotional Wellness we are learning about the importance of slowing down so that we can respond to a stimulus in a healthy way.  A deeper self-awareness of the importance of responding instead of reacting allows us to build better relationships and develop stronger self-management skills.



The school year is officially underway! I am currently in the process of finishing up visiting each class to teach a lesson about building a classroom community and relationships. I have also had the pleasure to meet with our newest students to Cherokee Trail. It has been fantastic to see the students again!
All CTE students receive the Second Step curriculum weekly taught by their classroom teacher or myself. Weekly lessons teach social-emotional learning skills with 4 different units.

      Unit 1- Growth Mindset & Goal Setting

      Unit 2- Emotion Management

      Unit 3- Empathy & Kindness

      Unit 4- Problem Solving
As the counselor, I have the privilege of providing support to every student at CTE. Confidentiality is respected, unless they plan on hurting themselves, hurting someone else, or someone is hurting them. Although I do not require parental consent, if you would like to request I meet with your child for a specific concern, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

The Principal Chronicles continue ... Although it seems like a long time ago, last week I was able to spend some time down at Outdoor Ed with our 6th graders. Unlike years past, I was unable to stay as long as I wanted since I no longer have an Assistant Principal. Having said that, the limited time I spent down at Stone Canyon was awesome. I was able to see archery, art in nature, balloon rescue, and fire prevention.
love archery every year, it is so cool to see the kids excel in something they may or may not have had experience with. Plus there is always a student or two who is like Katniss Everdeen and can nail the target. Art in nature is always interesting as well since it is basically students creating art out of what they find in the wild. They are so creative. 
Balloon rescue is always fun to watch as the students have to produce items that will protect a balloon dropped from a 6-foot ladder. It is really cool to see the students be really creative in how they protect their balloons. Lastly, fire prevention is always fun because the kids get to make predictions around how a forest fire would act during certain environmental conditions and they get to test them out. So cool!!
All in all, I just love to hang with the 6th-grade kids in that environment. I look forward to the experience every year. 
On the personal front, homecoming came and went in our house. Since I did not have my daughter last weekend, and as of this writing, I still haven't heard all of the good stories. From what little I gleaned from her limited conversations with me and her Instagram posts, she had a really good time. They went to dinner, took pictures, and then to the dance. The dance was outdoors and it sounded like it took them a really long time to get in. I'll have to wait until tonight to hear the full story as my daughter is just like me and would prefer to talk in person than on the phone. Should be interesting. Side note: she ended up getting her dress at Dillard's and I very much appreciate all of the different suggestions I received.
