FROM THE LMC - KAREN NOTTINGHAM

The CTE Library is pleased to host BookBar of Denver and illustrator Luke Flowers in person to our 1st and 2nd grade students on Tuesday, September 7th. Luke is celebrating his newly released picture book, Unicorn Night, and is ready to share his writing and illustrating craft with our students. What a great opportunity for our CTE students!

SEL/WELLNESS INFO - NOELLE DUNKER

What’s Happening in Social Emotional Wellness?

This week in Social Emotional Wellness we are developing an understanding of why we might lose control of our strong emotions.  It’s important for us to be aware that we are responsible for our actions, reactions, thoughts, behaviors, and emotions. As we learn to recognize our emotions and pause before reacting, we are able to engage with our prefrontal cortex to make thoughtful decisions.

AUGUST COUNSELOR'S CORNER - JANE STEINER

Welcome Back! My name is Jane Steiner and I am the School Counselor at Cherokee Trail Elementary. I am excited and honored to start my 4th year with my amazing CTE family and my 16th year as a school counselor! I am committed to encouraging, supporting, and empowering our students to become their best selves. My primary task is to help ALL students become better learners by providing a comprehensive and developmental counseling program that meets their academic, personal/social, and career development needs.

While following district and state protocols, I will be meeting with students individually and in small groups, conducting classroom lessons while incorporating pieces from various Social-Emotional Learning curricula, and collaborating with parents and staff.

Support provided can be therapeutic, but the role of a school counselor is not to diagnose or provide therapy. I am able to provide temporary/short-term support to help students overcome acute issues having an impact on their school performance. I am a resource similar to the school nurse in that she can provide help, but refers out for more serious problems. Licensed mental health counselors are the appropriate resource to provide ongoing therapy sometimes needed by families and children.

As the counselor, I have the privilege of providing support to every student at CTE. Confidentiality is respected, unless they plan on hurting themselves, hurting someone else, or someone is hurting them. Although I do not require parental consent, if you would like to request I meet with your child for a specific concern, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

I look forward to a great school year and supporting all our wonderful students at CTE!  Feel free to email me @ [email protected].

UPCOMING CALENDAR HIGHLIGHTS

FROM THE PRINCIPAL - JOSH MILLER

The Principal Chronicles continue ... Our calendar has rolled over to September and just like that we have entered our second month of school. Soon the weather will start to cool down and we will see if our brand new HVAC system is able to produce heat. Fingers crossed. At school, we are starting to dive deeper into our Benchmark Advance literacy pilot with our school starting Unit 1 on Tuesday. Prior to that, we have been going through Benchmark Advance rules and procedures to set up our classes for success. I can't wait to see us really take off.

On a personal note, my daughter has decided to part ways with her boyfriend. I guess these days you don't have to break up with someone face to face, you can do it via text which is apparently acceptable (side note: I did HIGHLY encourage her to at least dump him via Facetime but I was thwarted). Since that went down Sunday night she decided to wait a whole day before she accepted an invitation to homecoming from another boy suitor. Allegedly this new boy is only at the date level and not at the boyfriend level but at least he is taking my daughter to dinner before homecoming. Hope he is ok taking the pickiest eater this side of the Mississippi out to dinner. Let the grey hairs continue to take over my head. I also need to learn where kids purchase their dresses for homecoming as I haven't ever purchased one in my entire life. I'm not sure I am ready for all of this but I don't really have a choice. Never a dull moment in the casa de Miller.

That is it for this week, see you next week when the Principal Chronicles continue ...
