COUNSELOR'S CORNER - JANE STEINER

JANUARY

Finally 2021!  I can’t believe we are halfway through the school year!

Let’s talk about our children and the media! The media has a strong influence on our children. It can shape their self-esteem and body image as well as expose them to information about violence and crime. Please read the links below for information on how families can be more informed and can better assist their child(ren) in developing healthy!

DCSD recently hosted a highly anticipated virtual event with Nick Thompson “Helping Your Student Cope with Change”. You can watch the recorded event here. I guarantee you will find it very informative and engaging!  Many practical topics were covered from how to help your child with anxiety to having difficult conversations.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL - JOSH MILLER

The Principal Chronicles continue ...

The time seems to be flying by; next thing you know it will be time for Spring Break. There has been so much to do and so much going on there are many days I have to schedule lunch or else I will forget to eat it. Having said that, each week we do an exit ticket for our staff to see what they liked most about the week and what they need. The overwhelming response from last week was how much our teachers were happy that the students were back in the building. I can't tell you how much better coming to work is when all of our 440 little faces are there.
On the home front, I came up with a really dumb idea. I've had poor posture most of my life. It started when I was young and would sleep on my stomach with my arms under my chest. My spine basically slouched at the shoulders each and every night so as I aged I slouched. Plus being 6'2" and work in an elementary school where most of the people I interact with are under 4', hence the slouchiness.
In order to correct this, I have done everything I can think of. I've tried stretching, dry needling, braces, lying on my back for extended periods of time. Nothing has worked. During my CrossFit workout one morning another member mentioned how she used to be a horrible sloucher but she went to a Chiropractor and he fixed her (enter dumb idea).
So of course I went to go see one. I signed up for 6 sessions and so far I have done 5 out of 6. I have to admit it is a very strange experience to have him crack my neck and basically shove my back into place but that isn't so bad. The worst thing he does is what's called scraping. My chiropractor puts this weird lotion on my chest and shoulders, extends one arm out to the side, and then uses this medieval looking torture device called (what else) a scraper to "scrape' my skin. It is supposed to loosen up my chest and shoulders by releasing the fascia. It's terrible. I've done a lot of painful things and I thought nothing could hurt worse than hitting a nerve while dry needling but I was clearly wrong. Both sides of my chest are bruised as well as both my shoulders. The saddest part of all is that it is working, so he keeps doing it every time, it's awful. I'll see on my last visit if I want to continue but as I said as of now, it is really working as crazy as it sounds but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Ugh, just thinking about it makes me tear up a little bit.
Well that is it for this week, stay tuned next week (assuming I can still have full use of my arms) when the Principal Chronicles continue ...
