VETERAN'S DAY PROJECT - KAREN NOTTINGHAM

Dear CTE Families:

This year, to celebrate Veteran's Day, we are hosting a veteran from the Douglas County Veterans Monument Foundation to read to students and tell their story, along with a Q&A time.

In conjunction with this, we would like to decorate the walls with stories of our community's veterans. A template, My Veteran's Day Hero, is attached which your child can complete at home. Students can honor a family member or friend that has served in the military. There is a place to include their name, the veteran's name and service information, and either a photograph or a drawing that represents their veteran. You could also have your child write a short piece on why their Veteran is a Hero, and how they exhibited EPIC qualities as a veteran. This could either be on the template or attached to it. Your child's student also has the template if you are unable to print it at home. Please return the completed form to your child's teacher by Monday, 11/4, so that we have time to create the display prior to the veterans' visit on Friday, 11/8, and for our Donuts with Dudes event on Friday, 11/15.

Thank you for taking the time to honor the veterans in our CTE community!

NOVEMBER HEART PROJECT - JEN JAHNER
As November kicks off, we swing into the season of gratitude and thankfulness. I've been talking with several staff members and parents about a Heart Project!! Starting Monday, there will be paper hearts available around the building.  I would love if every staff member and student fills out a heart about what they are thankful and grateful for.  It can be a picture or writing.  Staff and students can fill out more than one heart or as many hearts as they would like!!  The idea is to fill all our halls with paper hearts and lift spirits!! I encourage that teachers reach out to their families and have our CTE community to come in and fill out a heart or send home a heart for families to fill out!!  It's a small gesture...BUT think about how cool it would be to see what we are all grateful for!!! If you have any questions, reach out to me.  I will be working with Caitlin Weyhrich and StuCo to get hearts made. Once hearts are filled out, there will be a basket in the front office to put the hearts in.  We have a few parents that want to come in to help put the hearts up in our hallways.  I'm thankful for this community!!

The
Discovery Program Application process is now open for the 2020 - 2021 school year.

The Douglas County School District
Discovery Program offers full day gifted programming in all content areas. This programming option is designed to meet the needs of gifted elementary school students (grades 2 -6)  who require intensity of instruction and acceleration beyond what can reasonably be expected from the regular school gifted programming.

In an effort to ensure equitable opportunity for families to learn about this program we have scheduled three
Discovery Program Information Sessions during the month of November.

Feel free to contact me with any questions.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL
 - JOSH MILLER

As I write this, I am at the PACE Center for our monthly district leadership meeting. I usually write these at school on Wednesdays, but I was packed in meetings yesterday so here I sit in the back corner of the PACE Center trying to knock this out during a break - if it sounds disjointed you'll, know why. At school, we have been spending a lot of time recently looking at our student data and trying to figure out how to better meet our student's needs. We are literally spending hours trying to dissect each and every student looking at everything, and then trying to fill any gaps. It has been great work but also very time-consuming since we are digging so deep into their data. On the home front, both of my girls are going to babysit this weekend for all of Saturday. It is really the first time they have babysat (not sure if that is a word) for that long. Plus this is also the first time they are doing it together. I am a little nervous; not in their ability, but more around what am I going to do for the day. Being that we only get our girls 50% of the time, giving up a whole Saturday isn't easy. Alas, both girls are teenagers now and at some point they are going to find people to hang out with that are cooler than I am (that will take some looking as I am pretty cool, in my own mind). Well that is my time, I have to go jump back into my meetings now as break time is over. I'm fairly amazed I got all of this done in my small 10 minute break. Guess I am a better typer than I thought. Well, see you next break or next time as the Principal Chronicles continues...
