COUNSELOR'S CORNER - JANE STEINER
Does your child struggle to understand what he/she reads?  Try these Rockin’ Reading Tips to improve comprehension. 1.  Look for clues- Show your child how to scan for clues before they start reading.  Tell your child to look at the chapter titles and headings, as well as the illustrations.  Then have them browse through the pages. Ask if they can predict what the text will be about.  This will help him/her focus on the subject. 2. Highlight key points- As your child reads, they should have a pencil handy to make notes.  Using different colored pens or highlighters may help the key words and notes stand out while studying.  The notes are also used to help identify and remember main points as the text is reviewed. 3. Engage your brain- They should ask themselves “What was the main idea in what I just read?” If the answer is unknown, the text should be read again until a solid understanding is gained. FROM THE PRINCIPAL - JOSH MILLER
The Principal Chronicles continue ... As I write this I am sitting on the top floor of the Douglas County Library, way in the back and working late, waiting for my daughter to get done with one of her activities. Since we live so far from Parker it doesn't make sense for me to drive all the way home because I would just have to turn around and come straight back. So here I sit waiting and working, working and waiting. Well actually more waiting than working but what can I do. Today was a pretty fun day at Cherokee Trail for me. I covered Ms. Coggan's 6th grade class for the whole morning. Ms. Coggan wanted to get some things done for our school and I wanted to save some money and not pay for sub so I figured I could cover her class. It was a very enlightening experience on several levels; First of all, it reminded me how hard all of our teachers work every day to meet the needs of our student, this includes Ms. Coggan and the whole 6th grade team. In addition, they have a really tight schedule so the whole morning we had our noses to the grindstone. So much to do and not a second to lose. I walked out of there exhausted and energized at the same time. All in all, the kids were awesome, the experience was awesome, and most importantly our teachers are awesome. So as I sit here staring out of the window trying to find something witty and amusing to talk about, I am really just thinking how lucky I am to be a part of such a great group of staff members. Thanks for all you do for our kids. Each and every one of you creates more of an impact than you can imagine. Until next time, see you when you're taller when the Principal Chronicles continue ...
