MARCH COUNSELOR'S CORNER - JANE STIENER Handwriting Helper Does your youngster have trouble with handwriting? Here’s a way to practice two important skills: controlling a pencil and forming letters. You’ll need a pencil, a small piece of clay, and tracing paper. First, have your child hold a pencil like she does when she writes. Next, put a piece of clay in the area where she grips the pencil. Mold the clay to fit her fingers. The grip will make the pencil feel more comfortable and help keep it from slipping. Then, find or draw pictures of common things, such as a house, bike, car, or tree. Print the names of the items under the pictures. Have your youngster trace the outline of each picture and the letters in its name on the tracing paper. *From 2008 Resources for Educators, a division of Aspen Publishers, Inc. CMAS Testing - Colorado’s State-Mandated Test Parents, here is a link to the practice tests for CMAS. All Cherokee Trail students in 3rd-6th grades will take the Math and ELA (English/Language Arts) portions of the test. 5th grade students will also take Science. On April 9th-11th grades 3-6 will take the English Language Arts portion of the assessment in the morning. The following week, April 16th-18th, grades 3-6 will take Math in the morning. During that week, 5th graders will take the Science portion in the afternoons. For more information on CMAS testing here is a link to the Colorado Department of Education. FROM THE PRINCIPAL - JOSH MILLER
The Principal Chronicles continue ... As I write this we have just survived the bomb cyclone and are coming back from two full days off of school. I have to admit, it was really strange coming back to school today, only to turn around and go on Spring break for a week. We have a ton of kids out today and it just seems like a strange day overall. In writing this, it reminds me of some of the other snow days I've had. My significant other couldn't figure out why they called school so early on Tuesday which reminded me of a time when they called school in the middle of the day. There was a HUGE blizzard that blew in around 10 or so that day and by noon it looked like the apocalypse had hit. The District called our school and told us to send everyone home. These were the days before School Messenger so we had to individually call each and every parent to try and get them to come and pick up their students. Of course with the bad roads, it took some parents forever to get to school. The last student left school at 6, six hours after they had called school. I'm guessing the superintendent at the time got an earful from quite a few angry parents and quite a few angry teachers. I remember another time when I was a pretty young teacher, we heard that there was going to be a massive snow storm hitting the day before spring break. Most of us went out to party after work keeping our fingers crossed that the blizzard truly would come. Needless to say, we lucked out, school was in fact canceled the next day, and we got to start our Spring break early. For those of you who don't know, my mom was an elementary school principal and I vividly remember many days when the bus was late and I would trudge back home and call her to say that bus didn't show up and that school "had" to be canceled. Her usual response was "yes, the bus is coming so get back out there before you miss it". So off I would go and be the only kid at the bus stop and yes the bus always came. I can't tell you how many times I was one of the very few kids at school because the rest of the kids got to stay home. Probably one of the main reasons I had perfect attendance for my entire student career. Hope all of you had a great few days off and will have a wonderful break. See you on the flip side of break. In compliance with Titles VI & VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008, and Colorado law, the Douglas County School District RE-1 does not unlawfully discriminate against otherwise qualified students, employees, applicants for employment, or members of the public on the basis of disability, race, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, national origin, religion, ancestry, or need for special education services. Discrimination against employees and applicants for employment based on age, genetic information, and conditions related to pregnancy or childbirth is also prohibited in accordance with state and/or federal law. Outside Agencies

Complaints regarding violations of Title VI, (race, national origin), Title IX (sex, gender), Section 504/ADA (handicap or disability), may be filed directly with the Office for Civil Rights, U.S. Department of Education, 1244 North Speer Blvd., Suite 310, Denver, CO 80204. Complaints regarding violations of Title VII (employment) and the ADEA (prohibiting age discrimination in employment) may be filed directly with the Federal Office of Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, 303 E. 17th Ave., Suite 510, Denver, CO 80202, or the Colorado Civil Rights Commission, 1560 Broadway, Suite 1050, Denver, CO 80202.

NOTICE OF DESTRUCTION OF SPECIAL EDUCATION RECORDS

Special Education records which have been collected by Douglas County School District related to the identification, evaluation, educational placement, or the provision of special education in the district, must be maintained under state and federal laws for the period of five (5) years after special education services have ended for the student. Special education services end when the student is no longer eligible for services, graduates, or completes his/her educational program at age 21, or moves from the district. This notification is to inform parents/guardians and former students of Douglas County School District's intent to destroy the special education records of students who exited special education services as of June 30, 2016. These records will be destroyed in accordance with state law unless the parent/guardian or eligible (adult) student notifies the school district otherwise. After five years, the records are no longer useful to the district, but may be useful to the parent/guardian or former student in applying for social security benefits, rehabilitation services, college entrance, etc. The parent/guardian or eligible (adult) student may request a copy of the records by requesting the records at this link ( Douglas County School District Transcripts and Records Requests ).
