All School Dance: The annual dance will be Friday, Jan. 24th from 6:00pm - 8:00pm. This is always a popular, well-attended event at our school! We ask that parents attend with their student and it is for CTE students only. With so many people in the building we could use some help monitoring the halls and the entrances & exits. Please consider signing up to help us make this a safe & fun event! Middle school and high school students are welcome to volunteer and will receive service hours for their time. Thank you!

JANUARY COUNSELOR'S CORNER - JANE STEINER Happy New Year! I can’t believe we are now in the second half of the school year! The students at CTE have been learning a lot about themselves and others through our Social-Emotional curriculums. The students are learning how to regulate their emotions as well as how their actions impact others. In Kindergarten, I will be implementing the Safer, Smarter Kids curriculum to teach students how to identify unsafe situations and tools to use in them. Fourth grade students are continuing to learn about mindfulness, now focusing on mindful movement through the Mind Up curriculum. Fifth grade students have broadened their perspective and knowledge about the world and others by learning about Human Rights through a series of lessons. In sixth grade, we are starting a new unit from the Second Step Program on thoughts, emotions, and decisions. Students have really enjoyed learning about the adolescent brain and how it relates to their emotions and behaviors. We are also expecting a visit from the counselors at Sierra Middle School this month to present information about middle school and electives.

FROM THE PARKER AREA COUNSELORS FOR PREVENTION Sources of Strength Healthy Activities (flyer) Healthy Activities Night will be held Thursday, January 23rd from 4:30 - 6:30 PM @ Sierra. Any and all Cherokee Trail students and their families are welcome to attend. The flyer is attached below. I also would love to stop by sometime this week with printed flyers for 6th graders hoping they can be placed in Thursday folders for parents.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL - JOSH MILLER

The Principal Chronicles continue ... Before I get into my usual ramblings about truly nothing of consequence, I thought I would brag a little bit about our staff here at CTE. In the past few months, CTE was recognized not once but twice for being academically awesome! First, as some of you know, our identified gifted students made the most growth in the WHOLE District last year on CMAS and then just the other day my director paid me a visit. As she walked in she mentioned that we rocked some data, this was news to me especially since this past week we met with every single teacher to go over their data so we had been swimming in the data pool for a while. What I didn't look at throughout that whole pool session, was how we did, compared to other schools. Turns out that for our Winter diagnostic we had a whopping 80% of our students already meet their typical growth goals for the year in Reading (and we are only half way through). By the way, typical growth is essentially how much a student will typically grow in the course of one year. That 80% that we achieved is the best percentage in all of Parker and might be in the whole District (I didn't get to see what the whole District looked like). The next closest school to us achieved a paltry 77%. So basically we kicked everyone's buns. I LOVE IT and is a testament to how great our teachers are here. Just sayin... Besides basking in the glow of our sheer domination of the Parker region, on a personal side, my youngest is currently in the middle of her first-ever foray into the world of playing a sport. So far she has played in three games and her team is undefeated. She has taken a grand total of two shots and has made one of them; so currently, she is shooting better than most of the NBA. In addition, she has one rebound and one steal (but I am not sure I can count the steal since the other team basically threw the ball right at her and she caught it out of self-defense). Despite those eye-popping stats she is compiling, her basketball experience mostly consists of her running up and down the court truly having no Earthly idea where to go and what to do. Having said that, she is learning and I think there is a slight possibility she might be having fun. Maybe. She has three more games left in the season and we will see if she decides to continue, or to hang up her basketball shoes for good. Only time will tell but keep your fingers crossed that she wants to stick with it. That is it for this week's edition, stay tuned for next week when the Principal Chronicles continue ...

Outside Agencies

NOTICE OF DESTRUCTION OF SPECIAL EDUCATION RECORDS

Special Education records which have been collected by Douglas County School District related to the identification, evaluation, educational placement, or the provision of special education in the district, must be maintained under state and federal laws for the period of five (5) years after special education services have ended for the student. Special education services end when the student is no longer eligible for services, graduates, or completes his/her educational program at age 21, or moves from the district. This notification is to inform parents/guardians and former students of Douglas County School District's intent to destroy the special education records of students who exited special education services as of June 30, 2016. These records will be destroyed in accordance with state law unless the parent/guardian or eligible (adult) student notifies the school district otherwise. After five years, the records are no longer useful to the district, but may be useful to the parent/guardian or former student in applying for social security benefits, rehabilitation services, college entrance, etc. The parent/guardian or eligible (adult) student may request a copy of the records by requesting the records at this link ( Douglas County School District Transcripts and Records Requests ).
