Teacher Appreciation Week: Want to help show your appreciation for our teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week in May? This committee organizes lunches and gifts to shower our CTE staff with gratitude for all they do for our children. Send us an e-mail if you are interested in helping.
Box Tops: Congratulations to Mr. Major's class for winning week 3 of the Box Tops competition! This is the final week so get all of your Box Tops in by Friday, Feb. 22nd!
Yearbook Orders: It's that time of year to order a yearbook if you haven't done so already! Order forms are coming home this week and are due with payment March 5th. Contact us if you have any questions.

Better Behavior Through Loving Discipline:
As your children grow up it is natural for them to challenge you. Sometimes, it seems easier to just let them have their way. But all kids need limits, and they need their parents to guide them. Here are some secrets of effective discipline.
Make the rules clear- Children do best when they know what to expect. Talk about family rules, explaining the consequences clearly. Example: “Put your bicycle away when you’ve finished riding it. If you don’t, you won’t be allowed to ride it the next day.” As your youngsters learn how to read, write down the rules and put them on the refrigerator as a reminder.
Be consistent and firm- You can expect kids to “test” the rules from time to time. When they do, try to stand your ground and apply the set consequences. Being firm and consistent lets them know that you mean business.
Give positive feedback- Try to focus more on your children’s right actions than on their wrong ones. This will encourage them to try even harder to behave. So, when you see behavior you’d like repeated, let your kids know. Example: “Thanks for hanging up your coat and backpack!”

Please Pull Forward
Thanks to all of you who use our parent car lane in front of the school. Just a reminder, please pull forward past the front entrance. We want to help as many students exit their vehicles at one time as we can. Stopping at the front door makes the line take longer. Thanks so much for your help with this!
Academic Excellence
On Friday, February 15th, while you all were enjoying your kiddos at home, our staff was learning all day. We had breakfast together then breakout sessions that teachers attended in the morning. They chose from Mindfulness in the Classroom, I Can Statements, Documenting Interventions and Cultivating Curiosity. All of these sessions offered immediate takeaways for teachers to use in their classroom. We ended the morning with teachers taking the CMAS practice test. This is the first time many of our teachers have taken the test. It was an eye-opener for many of them, walking away with a better understanding of testing environment, students needs related to stamina, and the skills necessary to be successful on the state-mandated assessment. After lunch our teachers were engaged in learning the Jan Richardson model for guided reading. Here at CTE, we are currently developing common language and practices related to literacy, both reading and writing. The Jan Plan (as we loving call it) will help us be more aligned from kindergarten through sixth grade. We will use common practices, vocabulary and assessments.
Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS)
After teachers took the CMAS practice test last Friday, we decided to extend our testing over two weeks. April 9th-11th grades 3-6 will take the English Language Arts portion of the assessment in the morning. The following week, April 16th-18th, grades 3-6 will take Math in the morning. During that week, fifth graders will take the Science portion in the afternoons. The schedules for testing are on our website.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL - JOSH MILLER
The Principal Chronicles continue ... This week's edition will be a little different than my normal, relatively witty satire; I will instead focus on a need and a big announcement. After meeting with our PSP on Tuesday, I have learned that we are in dire need of some volunteers to help run events for our school. Our PSP [Parent Student Partnership] graciously offers up their time to support staff and students in many ways, and one of their favorite things is to provide fun activities outside of the school day for students and community to enjoy. I know our students enjoy them because of the massive turn-out we get for every event we host! From Doughnuts for Dads to Games Night, PSP continually goes the extra mile. If you have some available time to volunteer, it would be greatly appreciated not only by PSP, but by our students as well. If we cannot gather enough volunteers to help out at these events, then we will have to cancel them, which would be a huge disappointment for our students. Here is the PSP website, please take some time to check it out. Our school and our students would greatly appreciate it.
And the big announcement, is about our full-day kindergarten. We have decided to open a second section of full-day kindergarten next year. If you know anyone who is looking for full-day kindergarten for the 2019-20 school year, please let them know that Cherokee Trail is the place to be. If any new families have questions they can always reach out to me directly. GIFTED & TALENTED NEWS
Hello,
On Tuesday night, February 26th, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm we will be having a GT 101 parent night at Chaparral High School. We will start out with a short GT 101 presentation and will then offer breakout sessions to attend including an overview of the Discovery program, identification, ALPs, etc. (flyer)
