Teacher Appreciation Week: Want to help show your appreciation for our teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week in May? This committee organizes lunches and gifts to shower our CTE staff with gratitude for all they do for our children. Send us an e-mail if you are interested in helping.
Yearbook Orders: It's that time of year to order a yearbook if you haven't done so already! Order forms are coming home this week and are due with payment March 5th. Contact us if you have any questions.

Better Behavior Through Loving Discipline:
As your children grow up it is natural for them to challenge you. Sometimes, it seems easier to just let them have their way. But all kids need limits, and they need their parents to guide them. Here are some secrets of effective discipline.
Make the rules clear- Children do best when they know what to expect. Talk about family rules, explaining the consequences clearly. Example: “Put your bicycle away when you’ve finished riding it. If you don’t, you won’t be allowed to ride it the next day.” As your youngsters learn how to read, write down the rules and put them on the refrigerator as a reminder.
Be consistent and firm- You can expect kids to “test” the rules from time to time. When they do, try to stand your ground and apply the set consequences. Being firm and consistent lets them know that you mean business.
Give positive feedback- Try to focus more on your children’s right actions than on their wrong ones. This will encourage them to try even harder to behave. So, when you see behavior you’d like repeated, let your kids know. Example: “Thanks for hanging up your coat and backpack!”

The Principal Chronicles continue ... With Valentine's Day happening this Thursday, Cherokee Trail is humming with anticipation. Any time the kids get to let loose and ingest large amounts of sugar they tend to get pretty excited. There will be lots of red and pink walking around the school, that is for sure.
It has been pretty interesting to see how the holiday has transformed over the years. I remember when I was a student (way back before dirt when we rode our dinosaurs to school) we wrote out a few Valentines and handed them out to the kids who we were friends with and were good to go. Then over time, we started making Valentines for every student and we walked around the class and placed the Valentine in the student's brown paper sack.
While my youngest was in elementary school and during my time in DCSD, things progressed to the point where we now have a "Valentine's box". The simple brown paper bag has now transformed into a megastructure. It's actually pretty cool to see how intricate Valentine's boxes have become. We have some students whose boxes are bigger than they are. Unfortunately, I have a district meeting all day so I won't be able to be here for the fun and excitement.
With all of that being said, Happy Valentine's Day from Cherokee Trail. We hope you have a wonderful day and a wonderful four-day weekend. We will see you next time when the Principal Chronicles continues.
