King Soopers Rewards: The King Soopers Neighborhood Reward Program has changed as of April 1st. We will no longer receive a percentage from the reloadable cards. Instead it will be linked to the loyalty/discount card that many of us already have. All you have to do is register your card and then every time you swipe it CTE will receive a percentage of your purchase. SUCCESS IN THE MIDDLE
We are very excited to announce that the DCSD Prevention & School Culture Department will again be hosting a Success In the Middle Conference on April 19, 2019. This conference is exclusively for students in 5th or 6th grade that will be transitioning to one of the nine neighborhood middle schools. This event is FREE for students and includes free lunch and as well as a free transportation option through DCSD! Registration is open until April 5th, 2019 but will be capped at 250 attendees. The event is designed to offer students information and strategies that will help them have a successful transition from elementary to middle school. We will be focusing on helping students meet new peers, work on managing change, fear and challenges, build resiliency and take care of themselves (self-advocacy, study habits, time management).

Creating a Positive Bedtime Routine
Nighttime, immediately before sleep, is the time when we're able to reconfigure our mindset (same as right after waking up). Having a positive conversation with your kids - right before sleep - will carry them into the night with gratitude and positivity. Use the link below to make a glowing cube to help foster a positive mindset bedtime ritual.
Each side of the cube has a question such as “What did you learn today?" "What are you grateful for?" "How were you kind today?" Have your kids toss a cube every night before sleep. They will have so much fun answering the questions (and let them ask you one too).

Wish Week Wraps Up
We have had a wonderful week celebrating and supporting Edward and the Spohn family. This family is near and dear to our hearts and we are so thankful we all have come together to grant Edward’s wish. The feeling in the building has been all warm and fuzzy with this event. We can’t wait for the unveiling of his wish on Friday afternoon. The way in which we come together to support our community is one of my favorite things about Cherokee Trail. THANK YOU!
CMAS Testing Begins on Tuesday, April 9, 2019
Parents, here is a link to the practice tests for CMAS. All Cherokee Trail students in 3rd-6th grades will take the Math and ELA (English/Language Arts) portions of the test. Fifth grade students will also take Science. On April 9th-11th grades 3-6 will take the English Language Arts portion of the assessment in the morning. The following week, April 16th-18th, grades 3-6 will take Math in the morning. During that week, fifth graders will take the Science portion in the afternoons. For more information on CMAS testing here is a link to the Colorado Department of Education. All things CMAS reside on this website. CTE’s CMAS schedules are on our school website.
No School on April 19th
Just a reminder...there is no school on Friday April 19th. This is a compensation day for the time staff has used to conference with families.

The Principal Chronicles continues... (Recruiting trip edition)
As many of you know, the District asks me pretty regularly to head out to job fairs to recruit teachers to Douglas County. These past few days I have been in Portland, Oregon attending a job fair. For those of you not familiar with a job fair, picture a large room, (in this case it was a huge conference center) where hundreds of school districts send people to set up elaborate booths to attract potential teaching candidates to their district. Across the nation, there is a shortage of teachers so the competition can be fierce. In Oregon, there were school districts from all over the North West including Alaska and even some foreign countries such as Sweden and China. Some of these districts are pretty tiny so they go all out. One District parked a gigantic tech bus in their space, another talked to candidates while playing corn hole. All in all, it was a lot of handshaking and resume exchanging, but we didn't find too many excellent teachers willing to move to Colorado.
Of course, what trip wouldn't be complete without some sort of strange event happening to me? Many of you know that Wednesday's are when both my daughters return to our house which is always a great day for our family. Last night my flight was due to arrive at 7 PM and my daughter has a church confirmation class until 8. I was hoping to pick her up from church and bring her back to our house to stick with our usual plan. I had a whole schedule laid out. I parked in the expensive lot so I could get out quick, I paid for early seating on SW airlines so I could sit close to the front. I was fully prepared to make it to Parker by 8 (I'm sure you can all see where this is going).
Everything about the trip had been running pretty smoothly but then came our trip to the airport. Portland is pretty progressive and has a really cool public transit system. We jumped on that and were at the airport in no time. I thought things were running on-time but then we got to the security line (I'm sure all of you can relate to this story.) I was directed to a separate security line after the TSA agent checked my ticket. The only other people in line was a couple who I don't think had ever flown on an airplane before. Ever. (disclaimer: we had plenty of time to get to our flight). The couple trying to go through security caused the metal detector to beep no less than 11 times. Everything set off the alarm from their cell phone which was in a pocket, their shoes being still on, the change in their pockets, the completely full bottle of water that was in another pocket (which was subsequently consumed in line prior to going through the metal detector for the fourth time).
Finally nearly an hour later, I exited the security line. Luckily I still had plenty of time to get to the gate. When I arrived we were about to board so my timing wasn't too bad. On SouthWest my spot in line was B1. Pretty good by most standards. If you aren't familiar with SouthWest, they let all of A go first followed by families and then they let the B line board. As I stood there and watched all of A line board the plane, watched all of the cute little kids board the plane with their families, and patiently awaited the B line to go. Just before we were allowed to board the plane a gentleman on a motorized scooter pulled into the gate wanting to board. I firmly believe the top speed of said scooter is about .5 MPH. The gate person allowed him to board the plane and literally 30 minutes later B line was allowed to board once this person arrived in his seat. Now our plane was delayed by about 15 minutes. My pick-up plan was starting to crumble.
The flight was uneventful. I watched Creed II. If you haven't seen the movie, let me sum it up for you: the movie starts with lots of boxing and sweating. Then a large man who speaks poor English beats up the main character. The main character goes into some soul searching only to discover he is a boxer. Then the main character decides he needs to beat up the guy that beat him up to prove to I'm not really sure who that he actually is tough. He then goes through various forms of intense training which starts really hard but then he gets tough and the training looks easy until the point he no longer smiles and is finally declared ready to beat the other guy up. The last part of the movie is copious amounts of boxing, sweating, trace amounts of blood from punching and in the end, the main character wins with lots of dramatic music playing and all of his unresolved masculine issues have been resolved. The End. See there? the Principal Chronicles just saved you all $7.
Our wheels touched down at DIA roughly around 7 PM and by the time we drove across 85 different runways we pulled into the gate. Since I was so close to the front I thought (foolishly) that I could still make it to Parker by 8. As I left the plane and was proceeding up the jetway into the terminal, the door agent ran over and slammed the door. I found this rather odd so I opened the door thinking I needed to do the secret knock only to discover there was a security breach in the terminal and everyone had to stay where they were including the jetway. So there we stood for 22 minutes. At least I didn't have to go to the bathroom, the slick gentleman in the business suit was doing the potty dance the entire time. At last, the terminal was clear and they released not only us, but every single other jetway. It was like ants leaving the ant hill. Everyone piled out and tried to get on the train. If you have ever been to DIA, just imagine the entire section between the two sections of where you board the train FILLED with people. I managed to make it on the second train out and we were basically a train sandwich. I had other people's belongings in places no other people's belongings should ever go. Probably one of the longest 5-minute train rides of my life.
I was so happy to finally get to my car and get out of there, you can't even imagine. I cannot confirm or deny that I broke several traffic laws but I eventually made to Parker a mere 32 minutes late.
